We are excited to invite you to a new opportunity to connect with the Rill community and the land that we collectively steward.
In the early 1970’s, when the first Monan’s Rill members were establishing this community, there were no homes or infrastructure on the land. Individuals, couples, and families drove up from the Bay Area and camped out on the land every weekend to do the physical work required to bring the community into being. Often teaching themselves how to do it as they went, the founders worked together, weekend after weekend, to establish the garden, create water infrastructure and roads, and build homes and community buildings. It was through their consistent, collective effort that this community was born, both materially and socially.
Now, more than 50 years later — and in a very different post-wildfire context — we are taking inspiration from the Rill founders to host a campout weekend on the land in August. Our goal is to bring people together to provide much-needed care for the forest that we love, which is still in the process of recovering from the 2020 Glass Fire. Join us Saturday, August 1 and/or Sunday, August 2 at the Rill for a weekend of tending the forest with good people, good food, and good fun!
The Rill is an intentional, intergenerational community in the Mayacamas Mountains of Sonoma County, California. We hold a shared commitment to the land we live on, to core community values, and to one another.
At this Forest Stewardship Weekend, we will work together to clear downed wood and brush from around native black oak and madrone trees, in preparation for a prescribed broadcast burn of up to 70 acres of forest understory, planned for this fall. These trees survived or resprouted after the 2020 Glass Fire, and they need our helping hands to continue to thrive as we tend the land with periodic beneficial burning.
Volunteers are welcome to come for the whole weekend or just for the day on Saturday or Sunday. The Rill will provide breakfast and lunch both days, plus dinner on Saturday and a variety of fun optional activities for Saturday afternoon and evening. Camping is available Friday and Saturday nights. No prior forest stewardship experience necessary, and instruction will be provided for those who need it. All ages are welcome!
